Nursing Playbook / A working session

Keep each role clear, even at the same hospital.

Separate paid support-role responsibilities from supervised student learning in a worked before-and-after resume section.

Original fictional example, followed by your own working copy. About our editorial approach

Two roles need two records

Working in a hospital and studying there can give you different kinds of experience. A resume should make the distinction visible, even if the organization name and some dates overlap. Start by assigning each responsibility to the role in which you actually performed it.

This session concerns accurate presentation. It does not define the legal scope of a support title or determine which duties you may perform. Use your actual title, verified records and applicable employer instructions. Do not copy a duty from this fictional case just because you held a similarly named role.

The working case: Avery's overlapping dates

Avery is a fictional nursing student. From September 2025 onward, Avery worked part-time as a Unit Clerk at an invented hospital. From February to April 2026, Avery also completed a supervised student placement there through a nursing program.

The paid job record supports routing administrative messages to the designated staff member and maintaining a unit supply-request list. The placement record supports observing a handoff with an instructor and revising a written reflection after feedback. The case does not establish independent RN responsibilities.

An early resume draft collapses the records:

“Hospital nursing experience, September 2025–present. Managed patient care, coordinated handoffs and led unit operations.”

The organization and overall dates may look familiar, but the entry is misleading. It blends student learning with paid duties and adds responsibility the record does not establish.

Separate the entries before improving the language

On a narrow screen, scroll the table sideways to read each column.

ExperienceAccurate entry structureExample supported by this case
Supervised educationStudent nursing placement; program; February–April 2026Observed a handoff with an instructor and revised a placement reflection after feedback
Paid employmentUnit Clerk; employer; September 2025–presentRouted administrative messages to designated staff and maintained the supply-request list

In a resume, the two entries could appear as follows:

Supervised clinical education

Student nursing placement, [verified program and hospital] — February–April 2026.

  • Observed a handoff with an instructor and used feedback to revise a written reflection on the learning experience.

Employment

Unit Clerk, [verified hospital] — September 2025–present.

  • Routed administrative messages to the designated staff member and maintained the unit supply-request list.

The bracketed names need to be replaced with the real applicant's facts. These are structural examples, not clinical responsibilities to adopt. If your duties differ, your bullets must differ too.

Check verbs, dates and hours together

A heading can identify the right role while a bullet still overstates it. Check words such as “managed,” “led” or “independently” against what you actually did. An observation should remain an observation; a supervised activity should retain that context.

Keep each date range with its own record. Overlapping calendar time does not create extra years of experience. If a form asks for hours or a particular kind of employment, use the requested definition and verified records. Do not double-count a period or place a student activity in an employed-RN field because it looks like the closest available option.

If the form is unclear, use the employer's instructions or appropriate contact. This worksheet can identify the question; it cannot decide how an employer defines an eligibility field.

Prepare a short verbal explanation

Avery could explain: “I had two roles at the hospital. My paid position was Unit Clerk, and my student placement was part of my nursing program. I have listed the dates and responsibilities separately.”

If asked about a particular activity, Avery should identify the correct role and personal involvement. There is no need to reveal patient details or internal records to make that distinction.

Use the worksheet to find misplaced claims

Create two records, then place each draft bullet beside the one that supports it. Mark any sentence that combines activities from both roles. Rewrite it as separate entries or remove an unsupported claim.

For broader resume structure, use the new-graduate session. For a shorter example, read the student-versus-employed experience guide. The aim is a record you can explain consistently in the resume, portal and conversation.
