NURSING PLAYBOOK / 04 2026.1 The Nursing Resume and Template Kit 3 APPLICATION STUDIO / 01 1. Build the evidence before the document A template solves the order of information. It cannot decide whether a statement is true. Before filling one in, open the evidence register and collect the facts behind your application. Keep the target posting beside you. You are making a small record of what you can demonstrate, not writing a biography of every shift. Start with the employer's instructions: requested documents, file type, experience, license, schedule, location and any application questions. Put each requirement in its own row. Write the source URL and date checked. Separate a required qualification from a preference. If a posting says a particular certification is required, a strong summary does not replace it. If wording is ambiguous, record a question instead of assuming the favorable answer. Three levels of evidence Direct evidence means you have done the requested work in a comparable context. Related evidence means you have done an adjacent task but still need training in the target workflow. A gap means you cannot currently demonstrate the requirement. These labels are editorial tools, not an employer's scoring system. Fictional candidate Maya is finishing her nursing program and applying to a first-role program. She has worked in retail and completed supervised placements. A posting asks for teamwork and communication. Her handoff practice is relevant, but she must preserve the fact that it was supervised student work. Her retail experience can support a separate account of reliability and customer communication; it cannot become clinical experience by changing the verbs. Original note: I ran the unit during my placement. Corrected evidence: I prepared handoff notes for my assigned patients under my preceptor's supervision and discussed missing information before report. Reason: the revised statement identifies the actual contribution without claiming independent unit responsibility. Write a private note explaining how you know each claim. It might be an assignment record, a training completion, your own accurate recollection, or a supervisor who can confirm the responsibility. Do not include patient records or employer-confidential documents in your personal evidence file. You do not need patient details to explain that you learned a communication process. What to do when there is no number Do not invent a percentage because a resume article recommends measurable results. Describe scope, frequency or a concrete output when you can verify it. If you cannot verify those either, explain the task and contribution without a number. An accurate account of an extra responsibility is more useful than an impressive result you cannot defend.

NURSING PLAYBOOK / 04 2026.1 The Nursing Resume and Template Kit 4 For example, fictional nurse Jordan helped orient colleagues to a revised checklist. Jordan has no before-and-after error data. The defensible statement is that Jordan demonstrated the checklist and gathered questions for the educator. Claiming a 30% improvement would change the evidence, not merely the writing. ANA's career guidance highlights credentials, experience, clinical rotations for new nurses and readable presentation. That supports showing relevant context. It does not establish a universal resume length or mandatory keyword formula. Our evidence register is an original method for checking the relationship between your facts and a particular posting. [Source 1] Practice and answer commentary Take the sentence “Improved patient satisfaction through excellent care.” Underline each part you can actually establish. If you have no survey evidence and cannot identify a particular contribution, the outcome is unsupported. Replace it with a true task that illustrates the relevant behavior. A possible fictional revision is: “Explained discharge instructions using the unit's education process and escalated unresolved questions to the responsible team.” That example describes work; it does not claim a measured improvement or instruct the reader in clinical care. Complete three evidence rows before moving on. For each, ask: What did I personally do? In what role? What was produced or observed? What remains uncertain? If a sentence needs several guesses, keep it out of the final resume until you can resolve them.

How the book approaches the problem
A clearer sentence should still be true.
Fictional nurse Jordan helped demonstrate a checklist but has no evidence for a claimed 30% improvement.
The kit revises the sentence to describe Jordan's actual contribution, then shows how to choose a resume structure, tailor a packet and inspect the exported document.
Original teaching material. Fictional cases are identified in the book. This description is not the PDF preview.
